Unlike 4G, which mainly focuses on communication between people, 5G has formed an end-to-end ecosystem. From the current point of view, the self-driving vehicles developed by car companies are still in a state of single-car intelligence. Without the support of the Internet of Vehicles, it is almost impossible to achieve L5 level full-scenario automatic driving, let alone the realization of smart transportation in the future. In the past ten years, autonomous driving and the Internet of Vehicles have not made significant progress, because there are still bottlenecks in the basic technology, and the commercial use of 5G networks is bound to provide a more suitable opportunity for the integration of autonomous driving and Internet of Vehicles.
Major LCD panel manufacturers have entered the automotive LCD display
Japanese audio-visual display related companies, such as Panasonic, Pioneer, Japan Display (JDI), etc., have turned to the development of automotive LCD display after being frustrated in the TV and mobile phone fields. The annual sales volume of automobiles is not as good as that of mobile phones. Obviously, it is impossible to install 50-inch or more displays. This seems to be a narrow niche market. However, industry insiders say that the development space for automotive LCD displays is far greater than imagined.
At present, the business opportunities of automotive LCD systems are mainly audio-visual display entertainment and navigation systems. The screen is about 5 to 10 inches. Considering the limited space of the car dashboard and front windows, the screen is difficult to increase further, not to mention driving must pay attention to the outside world. Mind, I don't have much time to look at the monitor.
However, the development and application of autonomous driving technology will bring about changes. Volkswagen Motor's consumer survey shows that after replacing manual driving with autonomous driving, consumers' expectation for cars is to be able to play, work and sleep. The tasks of games and work will require larger and better displays and different display technologies.
There is currently no solution to the problem of car dashboard space. Therefore, car-mounted LCD displays are currently focused on head-up displays (HUD). Previously, car windows were used as the main display system. In 2017, augmented reality (AR) technology was introduced to display symbols. It can be integrated with the external environment to avoid the distraction of driving caused by projection symbols. The practicality of the car head-up display is expected to increase greatly due to this technology, and the market growth can be expected.
Automotive display technology trends: In 2016, before the introduction of augmented reality technology, the global automotive head-up display market was 74.7 billion yen (approximately US682 million), and it will quadruple 305.8 billion yen in 2025.
However, the current head-up display technology belongs to projection display, the display range is limited, and it takes up a large part of the front space. There is no problem with the projection reminding and consultation of pedestrians outside the car, but the display in the car is insufficient, so Sekisui Chemical Industry, Sony, Japan Display , Sharp, Panasonic and other factories are studying transparent displays that can be mounted on car windows, turning all car windows into displays to meet the demand for large screens.
Japan Display is expected to be able to produce transparent car window displays in 2022. Sekisui Chemical pointed out that a full-color transparent display can be produced in 2025. Sony has proposed a 49-inch car window display, hoping to be popularized by 2030.
